Korea Night in Edmonton

October 2, 1999

We celebrated a Korea night this year, the first among us Koreans who are members of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Alberta. These members include Keumhee Chough Carriere (Associate Professor of Statistics), Giseon Heo (faculty lecturer), Jib Huh and JongTae Park (Postdoctoral Fellows), three students in the Statistics program (Kyunghoon Lee, Eunha Yang, Julie Jang) and three in the Mathematics program (Jungyup Lee, Jungmin Lee, Jiyeon Heo). In our celebration, we also invited four prominent Korean scientists in Edmonton area (Dr. Kyung Bay, Dr. Wanmo Chung, Dr. Chungyul Oh, and Dr. MyungKoo Lee). The event took place at the residence of Drs. K. C. and Jacques Carriere.

The two non-Korean spouses of KC and Giseon proudly decided to dress in Korean costume.

.

By the way, these two men are also professors of the Department ( Jacques Carriere is an Actuarial Mathematician and Byron Schmuland is a probablist).

Including all family members, there were about 28 of us in that night as you can see here

and here

and here

.

It was a potluck where everyone brought something special. You can see what we enjoyed from Nari Carriere's plate (bad timing for the photo shot, but the plate looks wonderful!).

.

We had Bulkalbee, Deokbokkee, Kimbab, Jabchae, Doejibulkokee, Dakdari, Kimcheebokumbab, Mapaduboo, and Mandoo and etc. Most important of all is the fabulous Kimchee Mrs. Chung brought. They were all so delicious. KC wanted to imitate Haparinangchae she loved so much last Summer when she returned to Korea, but it did not turn out great. I blame on the cookbook that did not give a good recipe! But they were all gone!! Did anyone actually eat my "Haparinangchae"? Not very memorable, I am sure!

The two postdoctoral fellows are shown here with KC.

The next picture shows all Korean students. Do you like the first picture

or this one?

From left in clockwise, Kyunghoon Lee, Jungyup Lee, Changju Jang, Eunha Yang, Jiyeon Heo, Jungmin Lee, Jib Huh and Jongtae Park.

Giseon came in a bright pink Korean costume! Guess who the mysterious man on the left is?

The next picture shows Dr. and Mrs. Oh, Dr. Lee and Dr. Bay

, and on the next one , Mrs. Lee, Dr. and Mrs. Chung . , followed by Dr. and Mrs. Bay in the next picture .

Well, while we are at it, I decided to include pictures of some statisticians in the Department having an informal meeting in the faculty lounge.

I hope the pictures told the whole strory.

Hope that all will succeed in achieving the goals that brought them away from home.
