We are in Week 5. I updated exams site for the final. Please check it regularly.

I will offer extra office hours before the final. Tentatively 14:00~16:00 on June 13 and 14.

Solutions for midterm is posted on exams site. Class average is 36.1 out of 60, which is approximately 60 out of 100. You did well. I plot the distribution here.

Extra office hours: I will offer extra office hours at 2:00 p.m. for two hours on Thursday (May 24). The room is at CAB 467. Note that the room is different from my office.

Solutions for HW1 have wrong answers on two problems. Please see the assignment site. Please let me know  further corrections, if you found.

Two-page long midterm review notes will be posted on exams site on Tuesday (May 22). If we have enough time, we would go through review notes in class on Wednesday.

Midterm exam  is on May 24, Thursday. You are adviced to study the following sections: 1.1,1.2,1.3,2.1,2.2,2.3,3.1,3.2,3.3

Text: Contemporary Linear Algebra by H. Anton and R.C. Busby

Purpose: Linear algebra together with Calculus provide the basic mathematical knowledge needed for other more advanced courses (in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, etc.) and for work in a wide variety of fields, including telecommunications and web engineering.

Material to be covered:
Chapter 1 - Sections 1.1 to 1.3.
Chapter 2 - Sections 2.1 to 2.3.
Chapter 3 - Sections 3.1 to 3.5.
Chapter 4 - Sections 4.1 to 4.4.
Chapter 5 - omitted
Chapter 6 - Sections 6.1 to 6.4.
Chapter 7 - Sections 7.1. (Possibly to 7.5)

Assignments:
There are 5 weekly assignments.  Assignments are due Wednesdays at 7 PM, and are to be deposited in the appropriate mailbox on the third floor of CAB.  Late assignments cannot be accepted under any circumstances.  All assignment marks will be considered in the calculation of your homework mark.  Please write legibly, use letter-sized paper with a cover sheet, and staple all pages together.

Weights:

Final grades will be adjusted to roughly fit a bell curve.

Important  Dates:

Midterm -- In class. Thursday, May 24.                  
Final Exam – Thursday June 14, 7:00 pm. 3 hours.
Last day for withdrawal from the course with grade W  Friday, June 1.
Deferred Final Exam
TBA, it should be written within two weeks of final exam.

Note: There is no deferred Midterm Exam. If you have a legitimate excuse (e.g. illness), then weights for the Midterm will be transferred to the Final.

What to bring to the exams:
- Student ID ("One" Card).
- Pen/pencil, eraser.
Calculators or formula sheets are not permitted. (You will have no need for the typical functions of a calculator during exams, as all the computations will be simple enough that you can do them in your head. On the other hand, an extremely sophisticated calculator could give some students an unfair advantage.)

Course Description: Systems of linear equations. Vectors in n-space, vector equations of lines and planes. Matrix algebra, inverses and invertibility. Introduction to linear transformations. Subspaces of n-space. Determinants. Introduction to eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The dot product and orthogonality. Applications. Math 125 is an enriched version of MATH 120. It covers the same basic topics as MATH 120, but in greater depth and additional applications. MATH 125 is recommended for students who plan to take further courses in algebra. Math 120 cannot be taken for credit if credit has already been obtained in MATH 102, 125 or 127.
