Installing the Lab Software
The software that comes with the lab manual accompanying Schneider and
Gersting's textbook is not shipped with the manual itself, instead one
needs to download it from the web. For instruction on how to do that please
refer to the 'Installation Instructions' section in the manual (on the
second page of the Preface), and the instructions below.
Basically, the process of downloading the software is twofold. First,
you need to download the lab software from the publisher's web page, and
secondly you need to download the Java Runtime Environment necessary to
run the software. Note that the lab software is already installed on the
computers you use in the lab. However, if you want to install it on you
home computer you have to follow the instructions below (or in the manual).
-
Step 1: (Downloading the lab software) (This is
starting to look like an algorithm, isn't it! :-)
-
Go to the publishers web page at http://www.brookscole.com/compsci/invitation/cpp/
.
-
You will be prompted for an Username and a Password. You will find them
at the bottom of the inside front cover of the lab manual.
-
From the resulting web page select the version of the software that fits
your operating system. For example, Microsoft Windows users should
click on the "Invitation (PC/Unix)" link.
-
The file, invitation.zip, will now be downloaded. The exact download process
may vary a bit depending whether Winzip is set up on your machine to automatically
unzip files or not. If Winzip does not automatically unzip
the file you have to do that manually once the file is downloaded (I'm
assuming you have Winzip installed on your computer).
-
Extract the zip file (if not already done in previous step). A directory
called 'Invitation' will be created.
-
In the Invitation directory you should now see two file entries,
one is a sub directory called 'Examples' and the other a file called 'invitation.jar'.
If you see these files you have successfully completed step one.
-
Step 2: (downloading the Java Runtime environment from Sun)
-
Go to the Sun's web page at http://www.javasoft.com/products/jdk/1.2/jre/index.html
.
-
Under the 'Production Release' section towards the end of the page click
the link that matches your operating system. Microsoft Windows users should
click the top link "Java 2 Runtime Environment v 1.2.2 ...Windows 95/98/2000/NT
Production Release".
-
Click the CONTINUE button (the first one) for the US English version.
-
A "Terms and conditions ..." page will appear, you have to accept this
agreement to use the software (click on the ACCEPT button to do so).
-
Finally (puuuuffff), click the FTP-DOWNLOAD button to start download the
software. Save the file somewhere you can find it again (e.g. on your Desktop).
-
Double click on the file to start installing the Java software, and follow
the instructions on the screen. The Java software will be installed automatically.
-
Now you have successfully installed all the necessary software.
-
Step 3: (Start the lab software)
-
Go to the directory where you stored the lab software and double click
on the 'invitation.jar' (or just 'invitation') file.
-
If we were successful installing the software, the lab software should
now start.
-
Note, you only have to do steps 1 and 2 once, from now on it is sufficient
for your to click on the invitation.jar file to start the lab software.
