Post-doc: River Ecosystems and Eco-toxicology, University of Alberta, Canada

We are seeking a postdoc candidate with strong interest in interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to study river ecosystems and eco-toxicology in the interface of biology, mathematics and programming. Preference is given to a highly creative candidate with strong background in mathematical modeling and data analysis.

Two projects are involved in this postdoc position: river ecosystem modeling and risk assessment of oil sands pollution. The first project is focused on modelling instream flow needs for healthy ecosystems.  Here mathematical and computational models will be used to assess the effect of anthropogenic water removal on river ecosystem health. The second project focuses on risk factors from toxic contaminants on aquatic species in the oil sands ecosystem. We will develop a new group of mathematical models to examine impacts of these contaminants on indicator species. Available data of interests in oil sands need to be analyzed and used in the theoretical framework.

The first project will be in collaboration with Mark Lewis and Peter Steffler (Alberta) in conjunction with government and university researchers associated with the related Alberta Water Research Institute project. The second project will be in collaboration with Hao Wang and Mark Lewis (Alberta) and Preston McEachern (Alberta Environment).

The position includes salary, plus benefits, travel money, and computing and research facilities. The position is for one year, with renewal for an additional year subject to successful performance and the availability of funds. Salary is $40K (first year) + $42K (second year). The tentative start date of the position is May 1st, 2011, but may be negotiable. The successful candidate will also teach one one-semester course each year. Applications should include: a CV, 3 recommendation letters, research and teaching statements, and up to 3 publications/preprints. These should be sent to
