Mathematics is an essential tool which is used everyday to help solve real-world problems. In particular, math can be used to describe how systems of living things change with time. To do this, we use mathematical models.

Definition: A mathematical model is a conceptual model that uses mathematical language to describe the behaviour of a system.

About this website

This website is an instructional unit designed to teach how basic linear algebra concepts can be used to mathematically model an invasive plant species. This model will allow us to make predictions about how the population will change over time, and will help us determine how to effectively control this quick spreading species.

Prerequisites

To work through this resource, it is helpful if you already have some basic linear algebra knowledge. The user will need to understand how to perform basic operations (addition, multiplication) with matrices, and should have been previously introduced to the idea of an eigenvalue and eigenvector.
