ON THE SCATTERING OF SOUND
NEAR A RIGID SCREEN WITH A SOFT EDGE

Abstract. An analytical solution for a point source scattering by a half-plane attached with a plane vortex sheet is given in the two cases when the wave equation is in the form for still air and when convection is present. This is important because point sources are regarded as better substitutes for real sources than line sources. The scattered field is analyzed when a finite region in the vicinity of the edge has a soft (pressure release) boundary condition; the remaining part of the half-plane is rigid. The solution is obtained by asymptotic methods and the Wiener-Hopf technique. The effects of convection are included at low Mach numbers and conclude that the field in the case of still air with a vortex layer is less than the field in case of a moving fluid.
