PLANE WAVE DIFFRACTION BY A SLIT
IN AN INFINITE PENETRABLE SHEET

Abstract. The acoustic diffraction of a plane wave
by a slit in an infinite penetrable plane is discussed. An
approximate boundary condition is used which depends upon
the thickness and material constants which constitute the slit.
The mathematical problem which is solved is an approximate
model for a noise barrier which is not perfectly rigid and
therefore transmits sound. It is found that the diffracted field
is the sum of the fields produced by the two edges of the planes
formed by the slit and an interaction field.
