THE IMMEDIATE DEVELOPMENT OF SEPARATION AFTER AN IMPULSIVE START

Abstract. Four distinct situations are considered where there is flow separation of a viscous fluid immediately after an external motion has been set up impulsively. The common thread to the problems investigated is that diffusive forces dominate the flow for small times and so the behavior can be described by a solution of the transient Stokes equation, even though the basic phenomenon is present whatever the Reynolds number.
