Abstract. The concern about a possibly severe strain of avian influenza (H5N1) in 2005–6 sparked a great deal of modeling effort that was of much use in coping with the H1N1 influenza pandemic of 2009. We describe some of the types of models developed and their applications, as well as some theoretical questions that arose during the H1N1 influenza pandemic and are not yet satisfactorily understood.
