SIMILARITY SOLUTIONS FOR STRONG
SHOCKS IN MHD
Abstract. A group theoretic method is used to obtain
a class of similarity solutions to the problem of strong shocks
in MHD, and to characterize analytically the form of the density
of the medium ahead for which the problem is invariant
and admits self-similar solutions. The case of power law is recovered
as a special case depending on the arbitrary constants
occurring in the expression for the generators of the transformation.
Numerical calculations have been performed to obtain
the similarity exponents and the profiles of the flow variables.
